Public Hebrew Courses – May – July 2024

Breaking the Code- Reading Skills in Hebrew

Instructor: Michal Nachmany
Wednesdays  10:30 a.m. – 1 p.m (eastern)
Starting date: May 29

This beginner’s class teaches the Hebrew alphabet (Alef-Bet), combining letters with vowels, and reading skills through biblical texts and prayers. You’ll learn to read and think from right to left, a fundamental aspect of the Hebrew language.

Readings in Biblical Hebrew

Instructor: Rabbi Fern Feldman
Wednesdays  1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m (eastern)
Starting date: May 29

This course aims to enhance students’ Biblical Hebrew reading and translation skills. Building on the vocabulary and grammar foundations from Biblical Hebrew 101 and 102, the focus will be on applying those competencies through extensive reading of diverse passages from the Tanakh. Class time will be dedicated to reading and translating selected texts, without required homework assignments. However, students are welcome to prepare and present texts of their choice for additional practice.

Rabbinic Hebrew Workshop – Hasidic Classics

Instructor: Rabbi Dr. Natan Margalit
Wednesdays  3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m (eastern)
Starting date: May 29

In this class we will practice skills in reading Rabbinic Hebrew, especially roshei teivot – abbreviations, Aramaic influences and reading without vowels. We will focus in this short summer course on some of the more accessible Hasidic classics such as Netivot Shalom and others. Students should already have the basics of Hebrew grammar (Hebrew 102 or equivalent).
