Position Description | Dean of Students

ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal is a transdenominational movement that is committed to bringing spiritual vitality and passion into the daily lives of Jews through programs, events and educational opportunities that empower leadership, build multiracial, multicultural communities, and generate powerful experiences. The ALEPH Ordination Program (AOP) is ALEPH’s largest program and one of the leading Jewish seminaries, training rabbis, cantors, rabbinic pastors and spiritual directors from diverse backgrounds, lived experiences, and representing nearly every denomination to serve the global Jewish community with the goal of revitalizing Judaism.

About the Position

The Dean of Students serves as the vital connection between students and faculty/administration at the ALEPH Ordination Program. This position requires a compassionate, organized leader who can advocate for students while upholding the program’s educational standards and institutional values.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Support

  • Provide pastoral care and academic advising to all students 
  • Conduct mid-year check-ins with first year students; advise mekhina students 
  • Address student concerns and implement interventions as needed 
  • Actively support diverse students and create inclusive spaces that honor the full diversity of Jewish identity
  • Supervise disciplinary actions when necessary 

Leadership and Administration

  • Supervise the Directors of Studies (student advisors) and hold monthly meetings
  • Oversee annual student evaluations
  • Hiring of new Directors of Studies
  • Participate in Deans/Admin team for policy development and decision-making
  • Collaborate with ALEPH Student Organization (ASO) on student issues
  • Serve on key committees: Summer Session Task Force, Financial Aid Review, Education Circle, Culture Team
  • Attend Governors meetings, ALEPH Staff meetings, and ASO/Deans meetings
  • Contribute to Shabbaton planning

Admissions Leadership

  • Chair Admissions Committee and manage the admissions process 
  • Respond to inquiries and conduct informational interviews 
  • Schedule applicant interviews with faculty 
  • Convene admissions committee meetings 
  • Draft decision letters and coordinate student onboarding 
  • Organize new student orientations

This position reports to the ALEPH Ordination Program Dean. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree preferred in education, counseling, Jewish studies, or a related field. 
  • Experience in student affairs and academic advising.
  • Strong pastoral and organizational skills.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive community that values diverse perspectives, traditions, and experiences with a focus on cultural understanding and mutual respect across different groups.
  • Understanding of Jewish educational traditions. 
  • Understanding and commitment to spiritual practice.
  • Working with a spiritual director (mashpia) required.
  • Experience with student information systems.

LOCATION

Flexible. The AOP operates as an online school with at least two (2) in-person gatherings/retreats per year in varying locations. 

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time role with flexible hours, .6 FTE (Full Time Equivalent)

The salary range is $50,000 to $55,000.
